The first name of Calangute was Colangut which was changed to Calangute by the Portuguese. The name is Calangute is associated with the word ‘Kaal’. “Kaal” means “Goddess Kali” who was worshiped by the fishermen here.
There are many stories as to how Colangut got its original name. Another story is related to the word “Kalayan Gutti” which means “Village of Arts”. And one story is from the word “Konvalo Ghot” which means “coconut tree”.
